Candide images

Vox's Candide imprint went through a phase of putting out avant-classical releases with striking sleeves, some of them very much of their time (late Sixties) and others just ruddy peculiar. I particularly enjoy the demented psychedelic rooster cover for a composer I've never heard of before, Xaver Scharwenka.

  1. A superb and stunning selection of covers. Have never seen any of them before. Thanks for posting Simon.

  2. Heck yeah! I want all of these. The Ligeti one is very "Sci-Fi paperback of a certain period". That's our man Schöffer on the Stockhausen one, btw.

  3. Yeah, that rooster cover is nuts.

Congratulations also to the designer of the Lukas Foss record for coming up with a design in the late '60s that looks exactly like a cheapo rave compilation from 1994.

    1. That's a Vasarely, mate - or a knock-off of same. Godfather of Op Art. #2 behind Bridget Riley in the Optical Art. But yes widely ripped off by rave flyers designers in the 90s, so you point stands. Indeed this video montage of the Maestro's greatest hits does look a lot like a cheesy chill out video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny1C-O37PCY
